Syringe Pumps are working by filling a syringe with the desired medium (aspiration) and emptying the syringe (dispensing) after changing the flow path with a valve.
- Dry running
- Can pump gas and liquids
- Self priming
- Reverse flow option
- Wide volume range (µl to several ml)
- Wide flow rate range (0.3 nl/min to 625 ml/min)
- Pressure capability up to 100 psi
- Very precise and accurate
- Maintenance free operation
Syringe pumps consists typically of 3 components, a drive mechanism, a syringe and a valve which is often a so-called rotary shear valve.
The simplest case is a 3-port valve where on port is connected with the syringe, one port acts as the inlet port and the third port acts as the outlet port.
The work flow looks as follows: The syringe is emptied completely (plunger moves up) and the drive mechanism initialized to make sure the system has the correct starting point. The valve is switched to the inlet position and the syringe is filled with medium (plunger moves down). Then the valve switches to the outlet position and the desired volumes are dispensed (plunger is moving up). This can be repeated until the syringe is empty, then new medium has to be aspired.
Before starting to work properly the syringe has to be primed, this means that the entire syringe has to be filled with the medium that should be pumped.
Typically this means that the syringe is filled twice with the medium to make sure all air is off the syringe.
The syringe can also be used as a gas pump only or using a so-called system liquid while the pumped medium is never going into the syringe but is only aspired in a disposable pipette tip or a reservoir. But direct pumping is far more accurate and precise.
The drive mechanism is designed to last for years, only the rotary valve, the syringe and the tubing are exposed to the pumped media and have to be replaced from time to time. TriContinent’s rotary valve can last up to 4 million of switching cycles, this has been shown during a competitive valve study.
TriContinent provides a wide range of different syringe pumps for a wide range of applications. The industry standard are the C-Series pumps which provide highest accuracy and precision while AccuPump and BasePump are affordable solutions for all standard pipetting tasks. The available syringe sizes vary from 50 µl up to 12.5 ml (C-Series)
